1929 DUESENBERG Model J Convertible Coupe J-112 by Murphy

Description

Considered by many the finest automobile ever built, the metaphor “It’s a Duesie!” remains a part of American lexicon to this day. Approximately 481 chassis were produced, all with custom coachwork – 140 of which were bodied by Murphy of Pasadena, California. The Convertible Coupe was the single most popular body built for the Model J Duesenberg with 60 produced. A bare chassis began at $7,500 before coach work was supplied. Most cost between $ 15,000 and $20,000 fully equipped (a Ford Model A in 1929 retailed for about $400)! Debuting in December 1928, this is car was the first Model J Duesenberg sold.

It is equipped with a 420 cu in (6,900 cc) Straight 8 Cylinder Motor which was based on the company’s successful racing engines of the 1920’s and features Dual Overhead Camshafts and Four Valves per Cylinder. In normally aspirated form, it produces 265 horsepower and is capable of a top speed of 91 mph, and 79 mph in 2nd gear. Other cars featured a bigger engine but none of them surpassed its power. It was also both the fastest and most expensive American automobile on the market.

Humphrey W. Chadbourne, a prominent mining engineer, purchased the J-112 at the show for $13,500. He had the factory add a spotlight, electric siren, Martin Cord tires and an HWC monogram on each door. The monograms remain in place. He sold the car in 1937 to a Yale student, when the factory closed. Several unique features can be noted on this car, including an exposed honeycomb radiator, experimental design bumper, simple gas tank cover, hub medallions and the under-the-hood horn. The current owner purchased and restored J-112 in 1996 and is the sixth owner. The J-112 has participated in four National Duesenberg Tours with the Schaubach family. It has been shown at many major concours events throughout the country, garnering a AACA National First Prize win, multiple Class wins and also Best of Show.
